Item #59906 Discoverie of Witchcraft. Reginald SCOT, Montague Summers, SCOTT.
Discoverie of Witchcraft.

Discoverie of Witchcraft.

London: John Rodker, 1930. First edition thus. Hardcover. Quarto. xxxvii + 283pp. Original red leather spine with green buckram boards, red device stamped in center of top board and gilt title to spine, top edge gilt, printed on Dutch paper especially made for this edition. Note - there were several binding issues: this is the one with the leather spine and buckram boards. Limited to 1275 numbered copies - this being copy number 572. An important - though very sceptical - source work on the history of Witchcraft. It is also considered a foundation work in the canon of conjuring/stage magic, as the author reveals a number of tricks used by people claiming occult powers to fool the gullible. This edition is by far the nicest of the reprints issued in the last two centuries. Leather a little darkened and lightly chafed at head and tail, corners very lightly bruised and chafed, end papers unevenly browned. Bookplate removed from front pastedown, a few short splits to front endpaper hinge, and text block straining a little (typical with this heavy volume). Otherwise a tight, clean VG+ copy of this attractive edition ( no dust jacket but loosely inserted is the cut down panel with publisher's blurb from the original jacket. ). Item #59906
