Chicago, IL: Willis F. Whitehead, 1899. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 96pp (+iv adverts). Original black patterned stiff boards with gilt titling to front board. Willis F. Whitehead (1854 - 1922) was a sort of proto- L. W. de Laurence: he advertised himself as the Supreme Grand Vizier of an occult fraternity called the Ancient Order [of] Oriental Magi and was apparently, founder of the Royal Adepts [of] Mysticism, etc. He published a version of the first book of Agrippa's "Three Books of Occult Philosophy Or Magic" (1898) and - it seems - several editions of "The Mystic Thesaurus" ("published and sold only by the author Willis F. Whitehead"). The contents of this - seemingly the first edition of "The Mystic Thesaurus" are given on the title-page and include small sections on the symbol of the cross, thought telegraphy, mind radiation and inspiration, number of endless evolution, the omnific word long lost revealed in number and geometry; the tarot of the bohemians; the clavicle of solomon; an "English Cabala of Correspondences" (!), the instruments of magic etc. etc. and ending with complete instructions for making and magnetizing the magic mirror, and necessary observances in developing communication with "celestial companions." Interspersed throughout are inspirational messages, anecdotes, etc. concerning "The Brotherhood of Magic" another "group" which Whitehead apparently ran. Appears to be a mixture of some serious occult belief, with more than a whiff of charlatanism. Boards lightly rubbed and a little chipped at corners, larger (one inch) chip missing from bottom of spine, small crease to bottom corner of front board, top corner lightly bumped. Lacks front free endpaper (first blank). Still a better than VG copy of a scarce edition, that due to its fragility is almost never encountered in better condition. Item #60583
