The Equinox. Vol. I No. IX (Volume One, Number Nine); The Official Organ of the A.:.A.:.; The Review of Scientific Illuminism

London: Wieland & Co., March 1913. First Edition - 'Standard Issue'. Hardcover. Small quarto. pp. (xxvi) + 314 + (xviii adverts) Original printed papered boards, with fabric spine with paper title label. This copy has the front board design with the title and a series of horizontal lines printed in black across it that was typical of later numbers of "The Equinox", while the back board has a large advertisement for Part I of "Book Four." Crowley was the editor and principal author of most of the volumes of "The Equinox," which contained a variety of poetry, fiction, and reviews - generally with esoteric themes - alongside a number of articles of occult instruction. The contents of this volume include: The Temple Of Solomon The King (Continued), Lines To A Young Lady Violinist On Her Playing In A Green Dress Designed By The Author, Energized Enthusiasm, The "Titanic", At Sea, Dumb!, The Vitriol-Thrower, The Fairy Fiddler, By Ethel Archer, An Evocation Of Bartzabel The Spirit Of Mars, The Testament Of Magdalen Blair, Ercildoune, My Crapulous Contemporaries, No, VII, A Galahad In Gomorrah, How I Became A Famous Mountaineer, The Tango: A Sketch, By Mary D'este And Aleister Crowley. Later numbers of "The Equinox" (as this) are far less common than the earlier numbers, and it is generally thought that he reduced the print-run, possibly by as much as half, as the series progressed and his funds ran low. The thin fabric used for the spines of the First Trade Editions of "The Equinox" was notoriously fragile, and is often damaged or missing altogether. In this case it is unusually good, with just a few small chips at the head and tail of the spine, and the original paper spine-label, which tended to flake off, is present and intact. The paper-covered boards are dusty and a little marked, and lightly rounded and chipped at the corners, with some light chipping to the edges, as almost always. The pages are uniformly toned, but not brittle. An unusual VG+ copy of a volume seldom seen in better condition. No dustjacket (none issued). Large heavy book, additional shipping may apply. Was $400.00. Item #60716
