Frontispiece with tissue guard, fold out, b&w illustrations. A study of the nature and mythology of the stars and planets, based on Camille Flammarion's "Histoire du Ciel" (1877). Nicolas Camille Flammarion (1842-1925) was a well-known French author, astronomer, novelist, and Spiritualist, who sought to apply the methodology of the sciences to his studies of Spiritualism, who maintained a private astonomical observatory at Juvisy-sur-Orge, in Northern France. Chapter headings: The first beginnings of Astronomy, Astronomy of the Celts, Origin of the Constellations, The Zodiac, The Pleiades, The nature and structure of the Heavens according to the Ancients, The Celestial Harmony, Astronomical systems, The terrestial world of the Ancients - cosmography and geography, Cosmography and geography of the Church, Legendary worlds of the middle ages, Eclipses and Comets, The greatness and the fall of Astrology, Time and the Calendar, The end of the world. Includes a number of beautifully executed star charts and steel engravings. Cloth a little discolored, with some minor bubbling and some rubbing to the edges and hinges. Head and tail of spine and points a little rubbed and frayed. Spine darkened with a match-head sized snag in the middle. Internal hinges cracked but holding firm. Moderate pale foxing throughout. Closed tear in fold out reinforced on back with acid free tissue tape. Overall a solid, near-VG copy. Item #61040
