Item #61225 Pistis Sophia. George HORNER, F. Legge.

Pistis Sophia.

London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, 1924. First Edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. xlviii+ 208pp. Original blind ruled blue cloth, gilt title, etc. to spine, index. A study and translation from the Coptic of the British Museum manuscript of this important third century (CE) Gnostic text in which the transfigured Jesus relates his teaching to his assembled disciples. It includes a lengthy Introduction exploring the history, origin, purpose, composition, authorship and dating of the documents by F. Legge, and a literal translation from the Coptic by Horner (the translation has been criticised as too literal - tending to follow the Coptic word for word rather than paraphrasing into more elegant English). Cloth slightly darkened - especially at spine, a few faint spots, lower corners bumped, spine ends bruised, a little light chafing to extremities, pages lightly browned, page edges and first & last leaves a bit foxed. Still overall a tight, unmarked VG+ copy. Item #61225
