The Silver Fairy Book.

London: Hutchinson, ND ( Circa 1895 ). First Edition (?). Hardcover. Octavo. viii + 312pp. Original decorated cloth, dark blue cloth with silver and tan decorations and silver titling. Patterned endpapers, all edges silver-gilt. Frontispiece with tissue guard, generously illustrated in black and white with plates and drawings in-text. A beautifully illustrated collection of fairy tales, some traditional and some original, mainly from European sources. Striking decorated cloth binding. This copy is undated and we have been unable to determine whether it is a first edition, or a very early reprint (if a reprint it is certainly within a few years of the first). Although not marked as such this volume is from the library of Jean Michaud (1884 - 1961), a musician, composer and author who had a great passion for Rosicrucian and esoteric studies, and who was for a time a friend of Aleister Crowley's and is said to have been founder of The Order of the Hidden Masters (OHM), a highly-secretive occult fraternity that was based in London. Head and tail of spine and corners of boards lightly bruised, front hinge cracked but holding firm, occasional pale foxing, heaviest on blanks at front and rear. Still a VG or better copy - and scarce thus. Item #61286
