Edinburgh: Privately Printed, 1885. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Octavo. vi +162pp. Blue cloth with printed paper spine label. "Small paper" edition limited to 275 copies. Edmund Goldsmid notes of the work, "The learning of the author is unquestionable.....we find the writing of Friar Bacon, Doctor Shaw, Eugeniue Philalethes, Signor Gualdi, and Flamel, besides innumerable writers on the occult sciences...while the whole book is so entertaining that it rivet the reader's attention." An interesting and apparently tongue-in-cheek account of the search for the Elixir of Life by someone who was very familiar with hermetic literature. Ex library copy with very minimal markings: bookplate to front pastedown, ink stamps to front pastedown and front blank, no other marks. Cloth a bit rubbed and darkened, corners lightly bumped, spine ends bruised and chafed with some very light chipping, endpapers unevenly browned, top edge darkened and dusty, a few spots of foxing to first and last leaves - else pages bright and unmarked. Overall a tight VG copy. Item #61377
