London: J. Roberts, 1868. First Edition (?). Hardcover. Bound Pamphlet. Small octavo. 62pp. Superb brown half leather binding by renowned London craft binder Bernard C. Middleton: calf corners with decorative gilt-rules along margins, and calf spine with raised bands and gilt title and rules, over older pebbled boards. Two black and white line-drawn portraits. An account of an important court case in which the plaintiff, a wealthy widow named Mrs. Lyon, demanded the return of a significant amount of money that she had given to the "table-turner, table-rapper, and so-called spiritualist" Daniel Douglas Home, at at time when she "was subject to great influence and ascendancy by him, owing to her belief at the time in his pretended spiritual powers." Extremely rare. Worldcat does not list this edition at all, and locates only a handful of copies of two other contemporary editions (published in the same year - the order of precedence is not known). From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his library seal blind-stamped on the front free endpaper. Margins somewhat closely cropped, but without touching text. A few brown spots to edges. Overall a lovely, near-Fine copy. Item #61431
