Modern Spiritualism ( Two volumes ).

London: Methuen, 1902. First edition. Hardcovers. Large octavos. Two volumes. xviii + 308pp. + 40pp. ads; xii + 374pp. + 40pp. ads. Red cloth gilt-lettered on spines & front boards. Index. Frank Podmore (1856-1910) was one of the ablest and most balanced contemporary critics of Spiritualism. He wrote widely on the subject in this important work which was later published under the title 'Mediums of the 19th Century.' It remains his best-known work, and is arguably one of the best critical histories of the subject ever undertaken: it was described by E. J. Dingwall as "the most important general history of the subject ever written and for the period with which it deals is not likely to be surpassed." From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris seal blind-stamped on the front free endpaper of both volumes. Light rubbing to cloth overall, corners and spine ends lightly bumped and chafed, spines a bit sunned, some light browning and foxing to page edges, endpapers and text pages, tiny abrasion to cloth at upper front gutter volume II, otherwise a tight, clean and internally unmarked VG set. Scarce. Item #61488
