Lavius Egyptus (First Book): Or the Unveiling of the Pythagorean Senate, AND Lavius Egyptus (Second Book) Lectures in the Pythagorean Senate, in the Temple of the Oracle of Dodona ( 2 Volume Set ).

New York, NY: The Neale Publishing Company, 1904. First Editions. Hardcover. Octavo. Two volumes (complete). First Book: vi +196pp; Second Book: vi +180pp. Original cloth gilt-lettered on spine & front board; gilt serpent design on front boards, B/w illustrations. A very odd work by Thomas Sawyer Spivey (1856 - 1938) American author of occult texts, religio-political manifestos, and novelss. This two volume work is said to comprise "the fundamental lessons received by Lavius Egyptus before the Essenic Body whose wisdom he recorded for twenty-nine years" in the fifth century BC. The first volume makes mention of the Rosy Cross; Pythagorean Brotherhood; Hermes Trismegistos, among others - and the second volume comprises "Lectures in the Pythagorean Senate in the Temple of the Oracle of Dodona." These lessons, which are reproduced as if from a typed manuscript - with numerous diagrams interspersed - outline a philosophical / scientific / evolutionary theory which apparently underpins later teachings. Cloth a bit rubbed overall, spine ends bruised and chafed, all edges and extremities a little rubbed, owner's names and notes on front pastedowns and front blank endpapers, pages toned but unmarked. Bookshop inkstamp and penciled notes to rear pastedown of Book Two only. Overall a tight clean VG set. Very scarce in a complete set - it appears that the First Book quite possibly was published in a smaller print run and thus is scarce. Item #61607
