Chicago, IL: Frederick J. Drake and Company, ND [ Circa 1902 ]. "Authorized Edition" Softcover. Square octavo. 264pp. Original printed wrappers. B&W frontisportrait w/ tissue guard, b&w plates, index. An early work 'by' Lauron William de Laurence (1868 - 1936), renowned book pirate, plagiarist, and publisher of occult literature. While this volume is certainly similar to De Laurence's "Hypnotism, A Complete System of Method Application and Use" (1900) it is a a separate work, and considerably longer. It is illustrated with wonderful period photographs. De Laurence was notorious for taking other people's works and reissuing them under his own name (sometimes re-titling them in the process). Despite his eccentricities de Laurence played an important part in the occult history of the USA: he was a pioneer in selling occult books and supplies by mail order, and the cheap "Pow Wow" books and other books of simple magic which he published were surprisingly well received, and he is quite revered in some quarters. With no date but for the 1902 copyright date, and no record of this edition in Worldcat it is difficult to be certain of the date of publication but we believe it to be circa 1902 based on the production values, paper etc. As de Laurence began publishing his own works under his "De Laurence, Scott and Company" imprint no later than 1909, this copy almost certainly predates that. A well used copy - lacking rear wrapper, front wrapper and spine well worn and chipped & torn, front wrapper has been re-attached somewhat crudely but neatly with glue and tape (a piece of which is over spine), corners bumped and creased, page edges thumbed, pages toned but unmarked. But for the loss of the rear wrapper, a complete and unmarked just Good copy of a genuinely scarce edition. Item #61729
