New York: Masonic Publishing Co., 1874. Subscriber's Edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. 632pp + 4pp adverts. Original brown cloth decorated in gilt and blind with gilt armorial device to upper board and gilt title to spine, two colour frontispieces with tissue guard, illustrated title page, fold out map and b&w illustrations throughout. The heavily revised fourth edition (first American Edition?) of the first significant historical studies of the Knights Templar to find its way to a broader audience. Using contemporary accounts Addison chronicled the rise of the Templars, through the Crusades, their acquisition of immense wealth and power, and their eventual downfall and persecution, with chapters on the architecture and history of the Temple Church in London. This edition was extensivley revised by Robert Macoy, correcting errors and adding a vast amount of material on the growth and development of (Masonic) Templarism from the 1820s onwards, with specific focus on Templarism in America. From a historical perspective the work played an important part in framing the vision of the Templars that developed in late nineteenth and early twentieth century occult and Masonic circles, and is frequently cited in their writings. This "Subscriber's Edition" was funded by American Templars, a list of whose names appears at the rear of the volume. Cloth a bit rubbed and discoloured, spine ends heavily chafed and frayed with some loss and splits to cloth at gutters, corners lightly bumped and chafed, rear endpapers split slightly at inner hinge - hinge holding solidly, page edges a bit darkened and pages toned. Color plates discolored. Punture mark through lower margin of about 30 leaves. Despite wear, still a tight and solid G+ example of this scarce and important edition. Item #61734
