Chicago, IL: The de Laurence Company, [ 1931 copyright ]. First Edition. Hardcover. Large Octavo. 192pp. Original red cloth with gilt title and design to front cover. B/w frontisportrait. A scarce publication 'by' Lauron William de Laurence (1868 - 1936), renowned book pirate, plagiarist, and publisher of occult literature. Despite his roguish eccentricities de Laurence played an important part in the occult history of the USA: he was a pioneer in selling occult books and supplies by mail order, and the cheap "Pow Wow" books and other books of simple magic which he published were surprisingly well received, and he is still quite revered in some quarters. In this volume de Laurence covers Thought-transference, Mental Telepathy, Clairvoyance, Psychometry, Hypnotism and Spiritualism. As the title suggests this is basically an old-fashioned "oracle book" or "book of fate" which supplies a series of questions - each with a variety of possible answers - one of which the "consulter" then chooses using a method laid out. Spine a little faded, corners lightly bruised, inside front hinge cracked but holding firm. A few spots to the first few leaves, a little separation between gatherings. Still a solid, VG copy of one of the scarcer de Laurence titles. Item #62050
