The Spiritual Magazine, with which is incorporated the Christian Spiritualist. Third series, Vol. I ( 12 issues, January - December, 1875 ).

London: Smart and Allen, 1875. First Edition. Hardcover. Bound periodical. viii+ 568pp. Orginal blue cloth decorated in blind on upper cover, titled in gilt on spine. Index at front. B&w illustrations. A bound edition of twelve issues of this scarce periodical edited by Dr. George Sexton, a secularist and free-thinker who converted to Spiritualism after demonstrations by the Davenport Brothers caused him to undertake his own investigations into the matter. In particular he became critical of conjurors who purported to reveal the secrets of conjurors, asserting that they were not the same, and sometimes displaying conjurer's tricks in the course of his lectures to prove a point. In addition to editing this magazine, Sexton lectured and wrote a number of small pamphlets. The magazine includes essays, correspondence, book reviews etc - with authors such as Newton Crosland, Robert Dale Owen, William Howitt, T. P. Barkas and William Hitchman among many others. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, though not marked as such. Cloth fairly well worn, darkened with some light spot discolouration. All edges and extremities chafed, spine quite darkened with some dulling of gilt title, spine end chipped with half inch loss at upper spine, corners bumped, endpapers lightly discoloured & with tidemarks at outer margins, pages toned with some spots of browning and a few ink blotches, text clean and unmarked. Overall a solid & serviceable about near-VG copy of this scarce periodical. Item #62092
