New York: J. S. Redfield, 1851. Second American Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. Two volumes in one. Consecutively paginated: 180pp & 230pp (+ xpp publisher's catalogue). Original black cloth elaborately decorated in blind, gilt title, etc. to spine, table of contents for each volume at rear. The rather substantial title probably provides and adequate description of this work by Louis Alphonse Cahagnet (1805-1885), a French exponent of what was then known as "animal magnetism" who worked closely with clairvoyants and was a pioneer of the use of narcotic substances for visionary purposes. First published in French in 1848 and 1849, and in Britain in translation in 1850. Oddly this copy has "Second American Edition" 1851 on the title-page, but we can find no reference to an earlier American edition, and wonder if the publisher actually meant "Second, American Edition" (ie it is the second English language edition, [first] American). Even more strangely another publisher issued a near identical version that is stated as the "First American Edition" of the work four years later, in 1855. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, although not marked as such. Note, there is no title-page to the second volume, but we have checked it against other copies and all are thus, so it is clearly just an eccentricity of the publisher's design. A few light bumps to edges, spine ends and corners bruised and chafed with some light chipping and short closed tears to spine ends, page edges darkened, endpapers a bit discoloured and browned, bookplate on front blank, scattered light foxing throughout, page margins unevenly browned, unmarked. Overall a tight, clean VG copy. Item #62114
