London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co. Ltd., 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. iv + 228pp. Original two toned cloth with gilt lettering to spine, b&w frontisportrait, appendix. A post-humously published collection of the writings of Charles Carleton Massey (1838-1905) a British barrister, Christian mystic and psychical researcher who was a member of both the British National Association of Spiritualists & The Ghost Club. Massey was said to have been associated with the medium Stainton Moses, and to have defended medium Henry Slade against the accusations of fraud. In 1880 he translated Johann Karl Friedrich Zöllner's "Transcendental Physics" into English but his own writings were not published until after his death. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, although not marked as such. Cloth worn and discoloured with some flecking at spine edges and chafing to all edges, corners and spine ends bumped and chafed, spine darkened and gilt lettering quite faded and title rewritten in faded ink below the original gilt. Page edges darkened and thumbed, later endpapers at front & rear endpapers are darkened, owners' name etc on front blank, the private library stamps of "Ipswich Psychic Society" on a number of pages including rear endpaper, light separation and darkened glue residue at inner margin of title page - but hinge holding, less than a dozen pages have pencil lines at margins otherwise unmarked. Overall a well-worn but solid and complete Good- copy. As is. Very scarce. Item #62198
