The Tree of Life. A Study In Magic.

London: Rider & Co., 1932. First edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. 286pp. Black cloth with gilt title, etc. to spine, b&w frontis, illustrated, color plates. The First Edition of Regardie's comprehensive exposition of magic. The work draws heavily from the Golden Dawn (and other) material published in Crowley's "Equinox" series. Regardie's references to the Golden Dawn sparked much debate in its survivals - the Alpha et Omega and Stella Matutina, and ultimately led to him being invited to join the latter Order. The first edition is notoriously fragile, it is bound in a very light, fine cloth, that has a tendency to split at the joints. The joints of this copy are solid, the inner hinges a little slack but intact save for a small tear at the bottom of the front endpaper hinge which has been neatly reinforced with archival tissue-tape. There is a horizontal crease in the cloth at the top of the spine just above the titling - either a production flaw or caused by a bump, and the base of the spine has been bumped. The black cloth is a little rubbed and discolored as always, the edges and a few pages show some scattered foxing. Still a solid better than VG copy, in better condition than it is usually found (lacking the rare soft-paper dust jacket). Item #62411
