Item #62450 The Origins of Alchemy in Graeco-Roman Egypt. Jack LINDSAY.

The Origins of Alchemy in Graeco-Roman Egypt.

London: Frederick Muller Ltd., 1970. First edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. xii + 452 pp. Original black cloth with silver titling, b&w illustrations, biblio, notes and index. The first major study of alchemical practices in Graeco-Roman Egypt, by Jack Lindsay, classics scholar and son of the artist, Norman. Edges, corners and spine ends lightly bruised and rubbed, top edge a bit darkened and dusty, page edges and endpapers a bit darkened and foxed, pages very lightly browned with a bit of light scattered foxing to first and last leaves, owner's name in pen on front blank, small spot of "white out" concealer on rear pastedown. Still a tight, unmarked VG+ copy in "laminated" dust jacket: although not immediately obvious the dust jacket has been "preserved" by the application of clear school-book type laminate. Otherwise the jacket is a lightly chafed and creased at edges, with light chipping to points and a short tear at the upper spine, foxing on reverse side, not clipped.). Item #62450
