London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman, 1834. First Edition - Edition Deluxe. Hardcover. Small folio (10.25 x 13.5 inches). xxii + 264pp. (+2pp Errata) + 13 plates. Original buff paper-covered boards with paper title-label to spine. Thirteen plates, ten by George Cruikshank, four of which are hand-coloured (as called-for) of which two have gold flourishes. A LARGE PAPER (deluxe) copy - and genuinely rare thus. Pettigrew (1791 - 1865) was a surgeon, antiquary and bibliographer, and wrote extensively on the history of medicine, on ancient superstitions and on similar topics. His enthusiasm for mummies began when he assisted Belzoni in the public unwrapping of examples brought back from Egypt. Inspired by this, "Mummy Pettigrew," as he became known, organised unwrappings of his own as commercial (and highly successful) public spectacles, although his approach remained scientific. His book is one of the first scholarly studies of mummies and was much praised on publication. From the library of George Cruikshank's bibliographer Albert M. Cohn, with his book-plate on the front paste-down. This very copy is listed in the Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge sale catalogue of Cohn's library (1921). Very light rubbing to boards, corners more heavily rubbed and a little rounded. Paper covering of joint of front board cracking, although the board is still firmly attached. Endpapers unevenly browned. Occasional spots and signs of use to text and some pale foxing and shadowing - mostly to the plates - which have also offset onto the adjacent pages which is typical for this volume. A solid better-than VG copy of the rare large paper edition of this interesting work. Item #62587
