Burslem, England: J. Tregortha, ND [ ca. 1827 - 1828 ]. First Edition Thus [ New and Improved Edition, Second edition ]. Hardcover. Octavo. Two volumes in one. x + 11-451pp & (ii), 3-164pp + index, b&w frontisportraits and plates. Originally bound in half leather - now rebacked - the original leather spine has been crudely but neatly replaced with matching brown cloth, original leather spine label laid on, orginal marbled paper boards retained, fresh endpapers added. The first work is basically a huge collection of reflections upon and accounts of death, many of which revolve around the appearance of apparitions, ghosts, spectres, spirits, etc. Its author, John Tregortha, was a methodist preacher and pamphleteer who gained renown in his home county of Staffordshire on account of the shabbiness of his clothes. As its title suggests, "A View of the Last Judgment" by John Smith is a study and reflection on the Biblical Last Judgment, and what it means for humanity. "News from the Invisible World" was first published in 1808 and "A View of the Last Judgment" in 1783. They were later (circa 1827?) issued bound together thus, as a single volume, with a shared Index at the rear. Boards well rubbed and worn, leather corners chafed to boards, original spine label a bit creased with some dulling to gilt, page edges browned, frontispiece and title page are having browned and discoloured, pages unevenly toned with scattered browning and foxing, damp marks and just a few pencil notes, a few short edge tears and creases to pages, fore-edge of one plate unevenly trimmed. Overall a tight just Good copy. As is. Item #62713
