Malleus Maleficarum.

London: John Rodker, 1928. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Large Quarto. xlvi + 278 pp. Original red parchment spine, and beige cloth boards, with gilt device stamped in center of top board, gilt title to spine, frontis. Printed on Dutch paper especially made for this edition. Limited to 1275 hand-numbered copies. "The most infamous text in the witch-hunters canon, this is the first English translation of the 1489 Cologne edition of what became the standard reference work for the inquisitors and judges of the witch trials. Contains an enormous collection of - often highly dubious - witch lore and myth." (D'Arch Smith B16). Old bookseller's descriptions of this volume neatly tipped onto rear blank. Cloth a trifle rubbed and darkened, light bruising to head and tail of spine, and bottom corner of rear board. Endpapers unevenly browned (as always). Bookplate of Australian wine-writer and bibliophile Walter Senior James on front pastedown, which also shows a little bubbling and a shadow where another bookplate was evidently removed. Merest hint of browning on a couple of pages. Overall a solid, unmarked VG+ copy. Item #62773
