London: John Rodker, 1930. First edition thus. Hardcover. Quarto. xxxvii + 283pp. Original red cloth spine with green cloth boards, red device stamped in center of top board and gilt title to spine, top edge tinted red, printed on Dutch paper especially made for this edition. Note - there were several binding issues: this is the one with the cloth spine and cloth boards. Limited to 1275 numbered copies - this being copy number 753. An important - though very sceptical - source work on the history of Witchcraft. It is also considered a foundation work in the canon of conjuring/stage magic, as the author reveals a number of tricks used by people claiming occult powers to fool the gullible. This edition is by far the nicest of the reprints issued in the last two centuries. Clippings of old bookseller's listings of this volume neatly tipped onto rear blank. Spine moderately sunned, light horizontal scratch and across middle and small darkened strip across bottom of front board, corners bumped, and a few light bumps to edges. Bookplate of Australian wine-writer and bibliophile Walter Senior James on front pastedown. Endpapers unevenly browned (as always). Overall a tight, clean better than VG copy of this attractive edition (no dust jacket). Item #62775
