(iv) + 264pp, Red cloth with gilt title on spine, frontis and b&w photographic illustrations, index of stones, index of proper names & general index. A scholarly study of the history and use of magical jewels in the western world. Areas covered include magical jewels in the ancient world, Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Age of Criticism, lapidaries, gems and their astrological influences. Appendices on manuscript sources in the Bodleian and British Museum, Indexes of Stones, Proper Names and General Index. Cloth a bit darkened with some very light scattered flecking and a few spots, spine quite darkened with some bruising and chafing to ends, page edges heavily darkened, endpapers unevenly darkened, gift inscription (dated 1923) on front blank, pages browned - a few with creased corners. Despite signs of wear and age - still a tight, unmarked VG copy in Good+ dust jacket (Dust jacket darkened and a bit worn overall, with several tears at folds which have been neatly repaired with archival tissue tape on the reverse side, not clipped. Now protected by removable mylar sleeve). Item #62823
