Small octavo. xlviii + 162pp. Original navy cloth with gilt lettering to spine and upper cover and gilt floral design to upper cover, bibliography, and index. The first edition of this thoughtful and entertaining study of scrying, from ancient Egypt to John Dee, and on to the Spiritualists of the late nineteenth century. Commences with a lengthy Introduction by renowned Scottish folklorist, Andrew Lang. Light chafing to corners and spine ends, half inch closed and unobtrusive split to cloth at upper spine, page edges and endpapers a little darkened, no marks to text, some pages roughly opened at top edge leaving short tears and chips (no loss of text), no marks to text. Overall a tight, clean better than VG copy in a near VG example of the scarce dust jacket (Light coloured dust jacket is darkened and a bit discoloured overall - more so at spine. Rubbing to all edges, folds & extremities, spine ends lightly chipped, two large chips to upper edge of rear panel, not clipped, now protected by removeable mylar sleeve). Item #62831
