Leigh UK: R. Welch, Esq, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 352pp. Original green cloth with gilt titling and leaf illustration to upper board and spine, Index of Plants and Trees, Index of Diseases and Ailments. B&w frontispiece with tissue guard and b&w plates, all edges gilt. The author, " Charubel" was John Thomas (1826–1908) a Welsh mystic who claimed to be a clairvoyant healer, wrote numerous books on related subjects, and edited a number of esoteric periodicals. He also co-authored "Degrees of the Zodiac Symbolised" with the (now much better known) astrologer Sepharial (aka Dr Walter Gorn Old). Thomas also developed a set of occult symbols that he is known for which were first published in Alan Leo's "Astrologer's Magazine" in 1893. In this work, an earlier draft of which was first published serially in the journal "Psychic Mirror", Charubel lays out what he describes as "a complete system of occult philosophy" connecting the human soul, and physical and psychical health, when interacting with various plants, trees, minerals and precious stones. A bit of light rubbing to all edges, light bumps to corners and spine ends, endpapers unevenly browned, owner's name in pen on front blank, pages lightly toned, tissue guard on frontis browned. Overall a tight, bright and unmarked VG+ copy of this very scarce volume. Item #62832
