The Astrology of the Old Testament, or the Lost Word Regained.

The Astrology of the Old Testament, or the Lost Word Regained.

Boston: Karl Anderson Publisher / Lee and Shepard, 1892. First edition. Hardcover. Small quarto. viii + 502pp. Original navy blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt device to upper board, patterned endpapers. B&w plates, 2 fold-outs (Denderah Zodiac & Mystery of the Pyramids), Tables of houses. Title pages states Karl Anderson as publisher, spine has the imprint of publisher Lee & Shepard. The author was an astrologer with a great interest in the ancient world. His thesis is that astrology was a science, inextricably interwoven with the Bible and presented as a gift to mankind by God, that was "handed down by the great and wise of the past, those builders of the temples of the sun, or universe," but that its meaning and value became lost to the Roman Catholic Church, although it survived in Freemasonry. The book presents both the author's researches into astrology in the ancient world, as well as offering instruction in its practice. Cloth a bit rubbed overall with a few light spots to boards, corners and spine ends lightly bumped and chafed, a few tiny tears at spine ends. Endpaper hinges cracked but holding nicely. Page edges and first and last leaves darkened, dedication ink-stamp above publishing details on title page, pages toned, owner's name on Contents page, shadowing (offset from an old newsclipping?) to one page, text otherwise clean and unmarked. Overall a tight, clean better than VG copy of this very scarce volume. Item #62837
