London: Rider & Co., ND [1928]. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 160pp. Original oat-meal cloth with black lettering to spine and double-ruled black border to upper board B&W illustrations. Adolph Ernestus Thierens (1875-1941) was a Dutch officer in the Royal Marines, and an astrologer who wrote a number of books on the subject and who, with Alan Leo and H.J. van Ginkel co-edited the Dutch version of Leo's periodical "Modern Astrology" which was later renamed "Urania" and is still in print today. In this volume Thierens examines the astrological symbolism of the tarot. According to Gilbert "Waite read the text in typescript prior to publication and he may have done some editorial work in addition to providing the Introduction. The descriptions of the Tarot Cards are based upon Waite's pack." Gilbert B39a. Cloth a bit rubbed and just a bit grubby, spine darkened, spine ends and corners lightly bumped, boards very slightly bowed. Page edges darkened and thumbed with some light foxing, pages toned but unmarked save for light ink offset (?) to upper edge of pages 123-127 - not affecting text. Overall a tight, unmarked about VG copy. Scarce in first edition (no dust jacket). Item #62944
