Item #63024 The Spook and the Commandant. C. W. HILL.

The Spook and the Commandant.

London: William Kimber, 1975. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 202pp. Original blue green cloth with gold titling to spine. The true story of how two officers of the Royal Flying Corps escaped from a prisoner of war camp in Turkey during the First World War, apparently by employing faked spiritualist mediumship - with a home made ouija board, sham séances, and a spirit-guided treasure hunt - and convinced some of their fellow prisoners, and captors, that they were genuine. Following an escape attempt they were declared insane and imprisoned in a Turkish asylum, before being repatriated: thus their incredibly convoluted ruse had worked. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, with his ex-libris blind seal to front blank. Very light shelf wear and dust, extreme edges of boards faded, otherwise a tight clean VG+ copy in VG+ dust jacket. Item #63024
