Essay on the Happiness of the Life to Come.

Bath UK: Printed by Richard Cruttwell, 1818. Reprint. Hardcover. Octavo. xxiv + 25-176pp. Contemporary cloth spine over papered boards with recent title labels on spine and front cover. An essay extracted from the work originally published in French as "Essai sure la Felicite de la Vie venir, par C. L. de Villette". The essay explores aspects of the afterlife from Biblical sources, notably the relationship betwen body and soul, the emotions, senses, the experience of pleasure and of pain, both spiritual and physical, etc. The author, Charles Louis de Villette, was a French clergyman who became part of the Hugenot diaspora in Ireland, serving at various rural churches and later in Dublin. The essay was first published in English in 1793 and seems to have been reprinted several times before this 1818 edition. From the collection of Dr. M. H. Coleman, although not marked as such. Boards and spine a bit rubbed and faded overall, cloth spine appear to have been varnished (not uncommon in the late 19th and early 20th centuries). Chafing to all edges and points, contemporary owner's names on title page, very light browning to page edges, a few spots of foxing, else internally fresh and bright. Overall a VG copy. Item #63028
