Paris: Editions de la B.P.S., 1923. Reprint (vingt-cinquième mille). Hardcover. Octavo. 500pp. Attractive contemporary binding, vellum spine and corners over brown patterned cloth boards, gilt lettered leather spine label. FRENCH text. From the Bibliothèque De Philosophie Spiritualiste Moderne Et Des Sciences Psychiques series. Allan Kardec (Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail 1804-1869) is the founder of "Spiritism"- "a science that deals with the nature, origin, and destiny of spirits, and their relation with the corporeal world." Kardec outlined his thought in five books which became known as the "Spiritist Codification". "Heaven and Hell" is the third book in that series and "gives a series of spirit-narratives confirmatory of spiritist theory." It is divided into two parts: "The Doctrine" and "The Examples". The first part explains the philosphy and moral beliefs of Spiritism with regard to Heaven and Hell, telling that they are misconceptions and that there is no polar division of spirits after death, etc. The second part comprises a series of interviews with the spirits of (then) notables, which give practical examples of the doctrine outlined. This is a 1923 reprint of the work. Originally a softcover, rebound without wrappers, as was typical (indeed intended) with French books of that period. Boards a little rubbed overall, vellum a bit darkened and discoloured, pages unevenly browned, text unmarked. Overall a tight & clean VG copy. Item #63037
