The Book of the Master, or The Egyptian Doctrine of the Light Born of the Virgin Mother.

London: John Murray, 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xxii + 204pp.+ iv adverts. Original maroon cloth with gilt title, etc. to spine, b&w frontispiece with tissue guard, b&w illustrations, endnotes, top edge gilt. The scarce first edition. The author, Adams was a fellow at New College, Oxford, and a respected scholar of Egyptology. Adams claimed that the true name for the texts now known as "The Book of the Dead" was "The Book of the Master of the Secret House". and that the "Secret House" referred to is the Great Pyramid, also called the "Light". In "The Book of the Master" Adams offered a detailed study of his understanding of the religious and secret esoteric beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians. Adams books impressed many of the great occult scholars of the time, with G. R. S. Mead quoting liberally from them in his massive work on Hermetic thought, "Thrice Greatest Hermes". Cloth lightly rubbed and darkened with a bit of spot fading at upper rear edges, spine ends and corners lightly bumped and chafed, pages a bit toned, no markings of any kind, thus a tight, clean VG+ copy.
