London: George Redway, 1887. First Edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. xiv + 360 pp. (+ 56pp publisher's catalog bound in at rear). Original royal blue cloth with gilt title etc. on spine, borders in gilt to upper board & in blind to lower board. b&w illustrations, charts + 3 folding plates. The first esoteric work to be published by Mathers (1854-1918), one of the most famous magicians of the time, and one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the fraternity in which Aleister Crowley got his early magical training, and which had such a profound influence on his own occult career. The Kabbalah Unveiled is a translation of the Kabbala Denudata of Knorr von Rosenroth (1677) which contained translations into Latin of parts of the Zohar and other Kabbalistic texts. Mathers' Introduction is still held by many to be one of the best and most cogent written on the subject. Cloth lightly rubbed overall, spine a little darkened, spine ends and corners bruised and a bit chafed, top edge darkened, very slight cracking to front endpapers at gutter (the hinge itself is quite solid), pages toned - with about half being unopened (uncut) at top edges. Overall a tight, bright and unmarked VG+ copy. Most unusual to find in such nice condition - it would be difficult to find a better copy. Item #63213
