Deep green publisher's cloth with gilt rules and titling to spine, gilt lettering to upper cover, beveled edges. Presentation leaf following front blank: "Presented by the Trustees of the Sir J. Jejeebhoy Translation Fund of Bombay [original owner's name hand written] Through the Author." The rare first edition of this monumental study of the Zoroastrian Gâthâs by Lawrence Heyworth Mills (1837 – 1918) Professor of Zend Philology at the University of Oxford and one of the great Victorian scholars of Zoroastrianism. Mills had previously published a simple translation of the Gathas in Max Muller's Sacred Books of the East series (Vol. 31, The Zend Avesta, Part III, 1887). In this ground-breaking volume he published the Avestan text in both original script and transliteration, a translation into Latin and free translation in English verse, a transliteration of the Pahlavi text and its English translation (the first translation of the complete text into a European language), a transliteration of the Sanskrit text of Neryosangh with the first ever English translation, a Parsi-Persian version of the text in transliteration (not translated), together with a commentary and copious notes. All edges lightly rubbed, spine darkened, corners and spine ends bruised and lightly chafed with a few tiny tears at upper spine. Page edges and endpapers browned, text pages a bit browned at margins with a very small amount of scattered browning and foxing, text unmarked. Overall a lovely copy of this very scarce First edition. VG+ condition (no dust jacket issued). Item #63291
