An Architectural Handbook of Glastonbury Abbey, with a Historical Chronicle of the Building.

Glastonbury: Central Somerset Gazette, 1920. Third Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 84pp.+ xviii (adverts, fold-outs and plates). Grey papered illustrated boards, fold-outs, b&w frontis and illustrations. An architectural handbook of Glastonbury Abbey with a large fold-out diagram of the Abbey by Frederick Bligh Bond. Frederick Bligh Bond (1864 -1945) was the architect employed by the Church of England to undertake the excavations at Glastonbury Abbey. A Freemason, Theosophist, and member of both the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia and the Society for Psychical Research, he applied the skills normally associated with psychism and Spiritualism, in addition to the more conventional archaeological and historical means when executing his task. This brought down the wrath of the Church hierarchy, who eventually dismissed him. Covers a bit darkened at edges and spine, light bruising to spine ends and corners, endpapers unevenly browned, pages a bit toned but unmarked. Overall a nice clean VG+ copy (no dust jacket issued).
