Green buckram with gilt titling to spines; top edge gilt, additions and corrections, index (at rear of Vol. II). One of the first serious studies and collections of Welsh and Manx. The author, Sir John Rhys, (1840 – 1915) was a renowned Welsh scholar, the first Professor of Celtic at Oxford University, First chairman of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, etc. etc. who was described in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as one of the "foremost among the scholars of his time" whose "pioneering studies provided a firm foundation for future Celtic scholarship and research for many decades." Cloth lightly rubbed & darkened, spine edges and ends a bit chafed, fore-edge browned, endpapers unevenly browned, owner's name etc on front pastedowns, slight split to front and rear hinges of Vol. I at blank endpapers (but hinges solid), page edges browned and pages toned, a few tiny pencil check marks on biological references pages, else unmarked. Overall a tight, clean VG+ set (no dust jackets). Item #63493
