Item #63692 The Confessions of Aleister Crowley: An Autohagiography. Aleister CROWLEY, John Symonds, Kenneth Grant.

The Confessions of Aleister Crowley: An Autohagiography.

New York, NY: Hill & Wang, 1970. First American Edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. 960pp. Original black cloth with gilt lettering on spine; front board has the Crowley self-portrait design (also used as the frontispiece) stamped in purple. B/w plates. Index. Crowley had originally intended that his "Confessions" would be published in six volumes, but only two of these had been published before the Great Depression and various internal disputes led to the demise of the publishers. The project languished uncompleted throughout Crowley's lifetime, and it was not until 1969 that the somewhat abridged version of the full six volumes was published in Britain in a single volume edition, edited by John Symonds and Kenneth Grant. This is the first US edition - published a year after the British. Although not marked as such this is known to have been the WORKING COPY OF FRATER SHIVA, who is well known for his time as a senior member of the Solar Lodge and for his various books, including "Inside Solar Lodge, Outside the Law" although the highlighting (see below) is probably the work of another owner. Obviously a much used copy, cloth somewhat rubbed and faded (as common), corners lightly bumped and a little frayed, page edges darkened and pages lightly toned. Occasional highlighting throughout (not by Shiva). In shabby dust jacket (Dust jacket well rubbed, somewhat heavy chipping at edges and folds, numerous old tape marks, clipped, now protected by a removable mylar sleeve). Still a solid reference copy with an interesting provenance. A large heavy volume which may require additional shipping depending upon the destination. Item #63692
