London: Frederick Warne and Co, Nd ( circa 1890s ). Second Edition - Reprint. Hardcovers. 3 Volume set. Thick octavos. xii + 578, x + 576 and xii + 574. Contemporary half leather over marbled paper boards. Spines with raised bands, gilt stamped leather title-labels, heavy gilt decorations. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Steel engraved frontispiece to each volume, steel engravings throughout. The set is undated, but volume I has a "Publisher's Preface to the Second Edition" dated 1872, so it seems safe to assume that this set dates from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. An extensive survey of the castles, abbeys, great houses, etc. of England and Wales, their history and folk-lore. An impressive work, in what were truly impressive period bindings. Unfortunately the leather hinge of the front board of Vol. III has split and the board appears to have been rather crudely repaired and is thus a little wobbly, with a paper reinforcement at the endpaper gutter. Some rubbing and bumps to the edges of all volumes, and usual modest wear that should be anticipated for a set of this age. Still a solid, complete set, priced down because of the split hinge. A heavy set, so additional shipping charges will apply. Item #63708
