William Keith Chambers Guthrie (1906 – 1981), was a Scottish classical scholar, who served as Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy at the University of Cambridge from 1952 to 1973 and as master of Downing College, Cambridge from 1957 to 1972. While Professor Guthrie wrote a number of books, he is best known for this comprehensive "History of Greek Philosophy ", a series of volumes in which he recounts the whole history of ancient Greek philosophy. Each volume is complete in itself on various aspects and periods: Volume 1. The Earlier Presocratics and Pythagoreans; Volume 2. The Presocratic Tradition From Parmenidies to Democritus; Volume 3. The Fifth-Century Enlightenment; Volume 4, Plato: The Man and his Dialogues: Earlier Period;Volume 5, The Later Plato and the Academy; and Volume 6: Aristotle an Encounter. Very light rubbing to lower edges, a few light bumps to corners and spine ends, page edges a little darkened and with a few light marks from handling, pages very lightly toned. Still overall a lovely, clean VG+ set in VG+ dust jackets (Dust jackets very lightly rubbed at edges, Vol. 2 price clipped, all in removable clear mylar dust jacket covers.)
