Gurdjieff.

Douglas, Isle of Man: Times Press Ltd., 1964. First English language edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xxii + 458pp. Beige cloth with red metallic lettering to spine, b&w frontisportrait of Gurdjieff and b&w art by Felix Labisse, Georges Rohner, and Ferro. The first English language edition of this unusual study of Gurdjieff which was first published in 1954 in French as "Monsieur Gurdjieff, Document, Temoignages Textes Et Commentaires Sur Une Societe Initiatique Contemporaine." Pauwels was supposedly brought "close to death" by Gurdjieffian exercises, and following his discharge from the hospital began to investigate the experiences of others, only to discover that not everyone survived the experience of involvement with Gurdjieff and his practices as he had done. What resulted was this in-depth, critical and often shocking study. Louis Pauwels (1920 – 1997) was a French journalist and writer who is best known in the occult world as the author of 'The Dawn of Magic' [ later: 'Morning of the Magicians' ]. Light coloured cloth slightly rubbed and with a few light marks from handling, spine ends and corners bruised and rubbed, page edges a bit darkened, adhesive on front pastedown from bookplate which is no longer present, small owner's ink stamp on title page, pages lightly toned but unmarked. A tight, clean better than VG copy in Good + dust jacket (Dust jacket a bit creased and rubbed overall, edges chafed with some light chipping, small abrasion from removal on sticker from lower spine, price clipped. Now protected by removable mylar dust sleeve). Item #63762
