Original brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine, blind borders to both boards, top edge gilt, b&w frontis with tissue guard, glossary and index. One of the earliest publications by Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki (1870 – 1966) the Japanese author and translator whose works on Buddhism and Zen were extremely influential in the West. This is the first English language translation of this important Buddhist text attributed to Indian Buddhist philosopher, dramatist, poet & orator Ashvaghosha (80 – c.150 CE). Cloth a little rubbed and darkened , light bruising and chafing to spine ends & corners, endpapers unevenly browned, small, pale damp mark (about one inch wide) at extreme top edge of text pages - not affecting text. Almost invisible tissue reinforcement to inner margin of text leaf. Overall a tight, VG copy. No dust jacket issued. Quite scarce in First edition. Item #63794
