Leyden: E.J. Brill Publisher, 1886. First English language edition. Hardcover. Small quarto. iv + 112pp. Contemporary (original?) brown cloth with gilt titling to spine. A discussion and summary of "The Book of Hierotheus on the Hidden Mysteries of the House of God", a Syriac mystical manuscript generally attributed to Stephen Bar Sudhaile Syrian mystical writer thought to have lived in the late 5th century CE. The text itself suggests that it was composed in the 1st century CE, by Hierotheos the Thesmothete, a disciple of Saint Paul and the teacher of Dionysius the Areopagite, however this attriubtion is generally considered to be spurious. Ex-Harvard Library with the usual markings: bookplate and ink stamps to front pastedown, ink stamps, etc. and cancellation blind stamp to title page. Small tear at inner margin of title-page closed with neat tissue repair to reverse. Cloth somehwat rubbed and faded, edges and points bruised and chafed, page edges and margins darkened, rear endpapers cracked at inner hinge but hinge solid. Pages browned with some chipping and creasing to page edges, text unmarked. Still, the library markings are relatively unobtrusive and it remains a solid, serviceable, albeit rather worn Good copy.
