The Fairy Tradition in Britain.

London: Rider & Co., 1948. First edition. Hardcover. Large octavo. 374pp. Black cloth lettered in gilt on spine. References and Index. B/w frontis & plates. A detailed and serious study of the fairy traditions of the British Isles, by James Lewis Thomas Chalmers Spence (1874 - 1955), a Scottish journalist, folklorist, and author of a number of works on the occult and British folk-lore. Light bumps to upper edge of top board, lower corners and spine ends. Page edges darkened, top edge foxed, endpapers unevenly browned, glue remains on front pastedown (bookplate no longer present?). A small news clipping with a charming recipe "to enable one to see the fairies" was once affixed to title page - it is still present but now detached, and the title page has a yellowed rectangle left by the glue which once held it in place. Pages lightly toned but otherwise a tight, and unmarked VG+ copy in VG dust jacket (Dust jacket panels lightly rubbed, edges and points lightly chafed and chipped, not clipped. Now protected by removable mylar sleeve). Scarce in dust jacket. Item #63902
