The Old Straight Track. Its Mounds, Beacons, Moats, Sites and Mark Stones; with Forty Illustrations from Photographs by the Author, Maps and Diagrams

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., 1933. Second Edition [ 'Second and Cheaper edition' ]. Hardcover. Large octavo. xviii (ii) + 234pp. Brown cloth with gilt titling to spine, b&w frontis and illustrations, maps, fold-out, appendixes, index. The second edition of this pioneering work on Leys and Straight Tracks in Britain. The author Alfred Watkins (1855 – 1935) was a self-taught archaeologist and antiquarian who coined the term "ley" (as in "ley-lines"). He personally surveyed many of the mounds, moats, beacons, hill-notches, and other objects which he believed the trackmakers of prehistoric Britain used as markers, and his photographs record for posterity those sites as they were then found. Cloth a bit rubbed and darkened overall with a few minor marks, all edges and extremities a bit rubbed with some light bumps and bruises, page edges darkened, endpapers unevenly browned, no marks to text. Still - overall a solid, clean VG copy (no dust jacket). Item #63903
