London: Printed for William Miller at the Gilded Acorn, near the little north-door in St Pauls Church-yard, 1661. First Edition - Third Issue. Hardcover. Folio. (10.5 x 7.5 inches). [ii - frontispiece] [18], 276, [2], 38, [4], p. 41, [2], 42-294, [10]pp., Contemporary leather boards, neatly rebacked and retipped, with contemporary style plain spine with raised bands and original (?) gilt title label laid down. With frontispiece portrait (plate) of the author. Diagrams. Table of Contents at rear. Arguably the most important work by John Gadbury (1627-1704), who along with his erstwhile teacher, William Lilly, and Gadbury's own student, John Partridge, was one of the most famous English astrologers of the seventeenth century. Gadbury first published "Genethlialogia, or, The Doctrine of Nativities," a general treatise on natal astrology, in 1658, and reissued it twice; in 1660 and 1661 respectively. As far as we can determine the same set of sheets were used for all three issues: the author simply replaced the title-page. In three main sections: "The Doctrine of Nativities"; "Primum mobile: or, Astrological tables" and "The Doctrine of Horary Questions." The first word of the main title-page [Genethlialogi'a] in Greek letters. The section "Primum mobile: or, Astrological tables" has a separate title-page, with imprint "printed by J. C. for William Larnar and Daniel White. MDCLVIII. [1658]", and pagination, the register is continuous. Each set of tables of "Primum mobile" has a divisional title-page. "The Doctrine of Horary Questions" also a has separate title page, with imprint "printed by J. C. for William Larner ... Daniel White ... 1658." Pagination eccentric as always with this volume, but it has been collated an is complete. A lovely copy. There are three early, and one modern, quite inoffensive, ownership inscriptions on the otherwise blank verso of the title page. The first and most impressive of these is one "John Beaumont His Book ..." which appears to be connected with a short astrological description dated 1703. It is tempting to think that this may have been the John Beaumont (c. 1650–1731) the English physician and with a passion for geology and natural history and a side interest in the occult, whose "An Historical, Physiological and Theological Treatise of Spirits, Apparitions, Witchcrafts, and other Magical Practices" (1705) is one of the better-known English witchcraft works. Sadly we have been unable to locate an example of that Beaumont's signature for comparison and the identification remains speculative at best. The volume has been neatly rebacked and the boards retipped as noted, and while there is quite heavy wear to the boards, they are nonetheless solid and have a pleasant "antique" appearance. Lacks front free endpaper (first blank), neat paper reinforcements to endpaper gutters, but a little chipping to the edge of the frontispiece and title-page, which are also a little darkened. The usual minor flaws associated with a book of this vintage, occasional browning, some very minor contemporary marginalia, one or two pinhead holes to the margins, and such like. Overall though it is a solid, clean, generously-margined handsome copy, in Very Good + condition by antiquarian standards. An important work, and rare, especially in such nice condition. Was $1650.00. Item #63906
