Tracts on Tabooed Topics. No. 1, "Does Spiritualism Demand Investigation?"

London: F. Pitman, ND (circa 1867?). First Edition (?). Softcover booklet. Small octavo. Pamphlet format. 24pp. Original beige upper wrapper with black lettering. An investigation into Spiritualism by William Carpenter (1797-1874), the radical political reformer and essayist and theological writer. He is most widely remembered as a proponent of the Chartism and as a friend of William Cobbett, but he also became a Freemason and was an early writer on British Israelism. Interestingly a considerable amount of the booklet is devoted to Carpenter's autobiography as a political editor and journalist, presumably as a way of setting the scene for his investigations. Most likely disbound. Lacking rear wrapper (cover), string binding absent all pages are loose but all are present, light chafing to page edges - with a bit of foxing, but otherwise fresh and clean Good copy of this scarce booklet.
