Katie Fox, in company with her sister Margaret, was one of the best known of the spiritualist mediums of the nineteenth century. In 1848 she and her family lived in a house that reputed to be haunted, and she supposedly ended up in contact with the spirit of a peddler who had been murdered in the basement. From there things took off quickly and both Kate and her sister became well-known as mediums, holding séances attended by many hundreds of the curious. In the course of this Kate travelled widely, including to England, where she married a London barrister, and Spiritualist. She was regarded as one of the most powerful mediums of the time, and was said to be able to levitate objects, produce mirror image automatic writings, and cause 'hands' to materialise, as well as the more normal spiritualist knocks and raps. In later years she took to alcohol, and died penniless in 1892. Dr. and Mrs. Taylor became familiar with Katie Fox while holding mediumistic sittings in their New York home between 1869-1892. This is Dr. Taylor's detailed record of the communications said to have been received by Katie Fox via mirror writing. It was first published by G.P. Putnam's Sons in 1933. The contents are divided into four "volumes" within the one book. A bit of light overall shelf rubbing with a few light marks to cloth, spine ends bruised and lightly chafed, pages edges darkened, pages lightly toned - text unmarked, old NYC Weiser bookshop label, a few creased page corners and short edge tears. Overall a tight, clean VG copy. (no dust jacket). Item #64102
