Chicago IL: Cosmic Publishing Company, 1885-1887. First Edition. Hardcover. Small Quartos. Two volumes of this bound periodical, 12 issues each volume - thus 24 issues (all published). Consecutively paginated, each volume 192pp, thus 384 + total pages. Original publisher's teal green cloth with gilt lettering to spines, blue wrappers bound in, edges tinted yellow. Vol. I has the publisher's prospectus bound in at the front, and each volume includes an index of contents. Vol. II has been INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the editor on the second blank: "With the compliments of J. E. Woodhead, Chicago, IL. Dec. 25, '96." According to the publisher's prospectus "The object of "Mind in Nature" is to furnish, in a popular manner, information regarding psychical questions, the relations of mind to the body and their reciprocal action, with special bearings on disease and health, and to give the most striking and interesting facts and discoveries of science. ... It will give a full resume of all the investigations and reports of the English and American Societies for Psychical Research, and ot eh Branch Societies to be formed in different portions of our country. ... One of it's chief aims will be to gather from original and trustworthy sources valuable information on the various subjects grouped under "Telepathy" ... which will be of important service to the investigators of psychical phenomena." In addition to the subjects mentioned, the journals have articles on a wide variety of topics including Christian Science, Hypnosis, Mesmerism, Precognition, Swedenborgianism, Evolution, etc. etc. Contributions are often by well-known authorities. The editor, John Edward Woodhead (1840-1918) was was born in England but his family migrated to the US when he was a child. As an adult he moved to Chicago, where he engaged in business and developed an interest in Psychical Research. He a founding member of the Chicago based Western Society for Psychical Research and also founded the Cosmic Publishing Company, which published "Mind in Nature." Cloth lightly rubbed and darkened overall, all edges chafed with a few light bumps , corners and spine ends bumped and chafed with some light fraying to spine ends. Light bumps and chafed spots to edges, pages lightly browned but otherwise bright, fresh and unmarked. Overall a tight, clean VG+ set of this scarce bound periodical. Item #64107
