London: M. Simmons for Gyles Calvert, at the Black Spread Eagle, at the West end of Pauls Church, 1649. First Edition. Small Quarto (7 1/2xx 5 ½ inches), [xvi], 215, [iii], 29, [xvii] + [ii errata]pp. Contemporary brown leather boards, with simple old paper reback. Decorative woodcut initials throughout. In three sections. The second section "A reall and unfeigned testimonie, concerning Iacob Beme of old Seidenberg, in upper Lausatia" has a separate dated title page(1649), pagination, and register. The third section "A warning from Iacob Beem the Teutonique phylosopher, to such as reade his writings" has continuing pagination and register and should have a separate title-page, but that is not bound into this volume. The first edition in English of this important collection of thirty-five "Epistolae theosophicae" ("Theosophische Sendbriefe") by Jacob Boehme, the German mystical philosopher whose work combined Christian theology with Neoplatonic , Paracelsian and Hermetic thought. The translator's preface is signed: J. E., i.e. John Ellistone. As with all copies of this edition the pagination is wildly eccentric, jumping and duplicating numbers, etc., but the book has been collated and is complete except for the title-page for the third section (see above). A fair copy only. Early editions of Boehme's work tend to have been much used over the years, and this copy is no exception. Although solid, the binding is heavily worn, rather crudely rebacked (obviously an early repair), the free endpapers (blanks) are wanting, the title-page is torn (with a tissue reinforcement to the reverse) and with significant chips, although without loss to the text. There is some soiling to the pages, a few holes in the margins, contemporary inked names, marginalia, and some rather interesting decorations scattered throughout. From the collection of British artist, writer and musician David Tibet (founder of the music group Current 93) with his bookplate tipped in onto the rear paste-down. A basically solid but much-used copy of a rare work. Item #64224
