All four volumes of Kaplan's fascinating encyclopedia of tarot and playing cards. Each volume is complete in itself. Volume I examines the history of Tarot from its origins to the present. Volume two examines the tarot cards produced between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, including studies of the earliest known cards, the families who commissioned them, and the artists who executed them. Volume III offers illustrations and descriptions of over 8500 tarot cards and includes a biography of Pamela Coleman Smith, artist of the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck. Volume 4 describes more than 800 different tarot decks - including more than 100 from Japan - as well as "Unpublished Tarot Designs" - that is tarot artwork that has appeared on t-shirts, the internet, etc., but for the most part hasn't been published in deck form. All are profusely illustrated. Volumes I and IV are First Editions and Volumes II and III are Second Editions. While a "used" set it has been handled very carefully and thus overall - just a tiny bit of shelf rubbing etc. - else solid, bright and unmarked near Fine copies in very lightly rubbed VG+ dust jackets. (Dust jackets have just the lightest edgewear and creased. All are now protected by removable mylar covers.) A lovely set.
