London: Catalpa Press, 1972. First Edition - limited. Signed. Folio. (17 x 12 1/4 inches) A set of unbound sheets printed on hand made paper of the special edition of Spare's "A Book of Automatic Drawings", along with a cancelled check SIGNED by Spare, all housed in an archival cardboard box, with paper title label. The sheets are printed on rectos only and comprise a primary title-page, decorative secondary title-page, contents and final page; a two-page introduction by Ian Law [& Roy Curtis-Bramwell], plus reproductions of twelve full-page black and white line drawings. All the illustrations and decorations are by Spare. The illustration on the penultimate page is printed in black and green, that on the last page in black and brown). "A Book of Automatic Drawings" was first produced from a then-unpublished sketchbook by the Catalpa Press in 1973. It was intended that 200 numbered copies of the special handmade paper edition would be issued (there was also a "trade" edition on regular paper). The publishers decided that this special edition would be 'posthumously signed' by Spare by way of a check (part of a cache recovered from Spare's former residence at Wynne Road, Brixton), which would be inserted into the special editions. The intention was that the special edition would be sold bound in quarter goat skin, however, only a small number were actually issued thus due to the high costs of binding and the untimely death of one of the publishers. A number of sets of unbound sheets, with the signed check, nonetheless survived. Six of these sets were released thus, in an archival folder, by Weiser Antiquarian books in 2006. The quality of reproductions of the huge full page illustrations is even better than in the normal edition (thanks to the handmade paper) and they would be suitable for framing – although it would be a shame to separate them. A couple of tiny marks on the box, otherwise Fine condition. Item #64385
